Pennsylvania’s municipal authorities are in a fight for their existence against large, well-financed private companies.

This unsettling environment is new to our state’s local authorities; but it’s very familiar to people like me who have built careers in business leadership.  It's called an industry roll-up, and I’ve been on both the acquiring and the being acquired sides.

For the foreseeable future, this is your new normal – and yes, it’s scary.  If it hasn’t affected

you yet, it will; the private companies aren’t after just a piece of the market.  And if they acquire

your authority, you can expect to be replaced within three to five years by someone younger

and cheaper than you.

​

But this isn’t cause for despair.  It’s a call to urgent action.

 

You see, you have real cards to play in this challenge that your private business counterparts

never had.  You have it in your power to keep your job, keep your employees’ jobs, and

to continue serving your community as a public entity (which my business experience

convinces me is the better alternative for everyone).
